TALON - LOOKING FOR A FUTURE - SINGING UNICORN HAS GONE MISSING by PIPSISQUEAK, AGE 8, AZTEC

TALON SEARCHES FOR PATH FORWARD

The right group or individual could continue your local news, but today for our family, operating TALON is no longer feasible.

TALON Publishing will consider transferring control of TALON brand assets to the right person, business, or group who is passionate, dedicated, and qualified. Degree not necessary, but passion, drive, vision, and community connections are. Because we believe news to be an important community asset, we are open to legitimate proposals for continuing TALON's community service.

TALON Publishing, which has operated TALON since 2014 will cease publication of TALON with the February 1, 2019 issue you are now reading.

TALON Publishing has implemented many ideas during our family's tenure, each aimed to keep your local news plane in the air. As with any organization, some changes have worked well, some less so. Today we are out of runway.

Effective February 1, 2019, J.R. Sykes resigns as Publisher and Editor of TALON. As of this writing, no replacement has been found.

Industry changes, politics, and a lemming-like shift to digital advertising and the wholesale exchange of privacy, has changed our country and our business. A thirty-two percent Federal tariff enacted in January of 2018 aimed specifically at most American newsprint supplies, plumb took the wind out of our sails. This kind of taxation makes a citizen feel that government may not be completely supportive of your local news.

It has been alternately exciting, gratifying, beautiful, fun, and unnerving to serve as your editor and publisher. I'm grateful to the community, sponsors, supporters, drivers, writers and volunteers for their hard work, and for my chance to live a lifelong dream. I would not trade the time and the friendship we have shared. It is my belief that I will harvest lessons from this work years into the future.

Today, my family still believes in the importance of newspaper service to a community. Bringing people together to share in the area's tone, personalities, leadership, assets, and history are a critical glue for building community. Personalities, leaders, organizers, businesses and citizens of all stripes benefit from the common understanding and dialogue provided within your newspaper. The moderated content offered helps to preserve civil dialogue and brings to light important issues. In 2018 TALON distributed six and a half million pages (plus digital) of community news and happenings attracting visitors and shoppers from around the region. No local service reaches as widely, or shares with as many. Today, web and social media together account for an average eight percent of readership. Surprised?! Twenty years into the digital revolution, readers still prefer print. I am confident that advertisers will catch on to this trend in time.

Thank you for allowing me to serve our community these past years, it has been an honor and privilege. There is simply not enough space in one issue to thank everyone who who has been a part of TALON for the past quarter century, so this will have to do. What future endeavors will develop going forward are not yet settled, but I trust that the right answer will come in its time.

May god bless our efforts as we go forward together.

J.R. Sykes, Aztec, ---- <33>
