DEAR TALON - Bloomfield Chamber

January 18, 2019

“ Continue the Bloomfield Chamber Meetings?“

A chamber of commerce (or board of trade) is a form of business network, for example, a local organization of businesses whose goal is to further the interests of businesses. Business owners in towns and cities form these local societies to advocate on behalf of the business community.”

Reading that definition what does OUR chamber do for us? They have nice food drives, they do nice toy drives, great parade, nice Christmas lights in the park ( But NONE on MAIN STREET!! We were the ONLY town without Christmas lights in our entire area!)

The moral among the businesses in Bloomfield is beyond depressing. The chamber should concentrate more in business events than, things that do not help merchants in this town at all. I also belong to the Economic Development Committee, every time we come up with great ideas to maybe help the businesses we run into a brick wall because ALL those things are supposed to be done by the chamber. We tried interacting with the chamber to no avail, apparently they feel they do what needs to be done for the businesses in this town, and needs no improvement Nothing EVER changes! Maybe just maybe if we had constructive meetings, with plans to build business in the town, or even ideas to bring tourism here and PLEASE do not even mention the Balloon Rally, because no one , and I live here, ever knows when it is!! Does anyone advertise it in out of town places to bring people in to spend money..no..We could be doing lots of things and at least TRY to build the town back up…like our growers market, it could be awesome, and I’m hoping it is awesome this summer, but we need to put the effort in to that and other things in this town…OUR town! So do I think meetings should continue, I sure do, do I think in those meetings we need to throw ideas out there to at least TRY and help bring business into the town I sure do.

We need to band together as a group to help accomplish what other towns in our areas succeed at that we don’t even attempt to try.

Lets face it, if we don’t help ourselves who is going to help us? How can we feel together as a business community if we meet every 3 months??? If the businesses in this town are apathetic than it’s the CHAMBER’S job to build moral, think outside the box..advertise meetings..we don’t need speakers, at the meetings, we need ideas from the members of this town..OUR town…If the chamber doesn’t feel up to that task, than as harsh as this may sound..we need a new chamber, new blood, new ideas..only we can save our town..and boy does it need saving, by US!

Susan Rempe, Bloomfield
