WHAT DOES AZTEC STRONG MEAN TO YOU?

TALON ASKED Wrestling COACH HERB STINSON

by Pilar Owens, TALON

When TALON called Coach Herb Stinson on Monday, he thought that the small town aspect of Aztec has a role in the answer to that question. He said he could never live in a big city because "you go from one end to the other and you're a foreigner." However, in Aztec it's a commonly held belief that everyone is important. That's being Aztec Strong.

Coach also said, "I think Aztec Strong means the community came together when we needed to," referring to December 7th 2017. Since he's lived in Aztec since he was a child, Coach has seen the city evolve. In some ways it's worsened; in some ways it's improved, "but when it came right down to it" Aztec united as a community. Even people who haven't been here "for generations and generations" become part of Aztec. Community is being Aztec Strong.

Finally, Coach said preparedness is being Aztec Strong. He credited Superintendent Kirk Carpenter and the whole administration of Aztec schools for their foresight in preventing a greater tragedy. Coach said it's tough to have to do drills for emergencies like the one on December 7th, but the leadership of Aztec schools made it happen. "As much of a tragedy as it was, it could have been so much worse (without the training) and I think that's Aztec Strong as well."
