“Originally I was an archaeologist,” said Ed Kotyk. Before he became Aztec’s project manager, Kotyk graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1986 with a bachelor’s in Anthropology. “I was able to get a job out here in the Southwest working with the Zuni tribe.” Starting in 1987 Kotyk worked six years for the Zuni tribe, transferred to working at San Juan College while studying Computer Science.

In 1999 Kotyk started his nearly 20 year tenure with the City of Aztec. They hired him to work in the IT department. He spent a week in IT.

The city manager at the time wanted Kotyk as city clerk right away. So Kotyk quickly transferred from IT team member to city clerk. He worked in various city departments after that for 12 years.

“So now I’m the project manager,” said Kotyk. “If you wanna summarize it in one sentence my job is to support other departments and their needs.” This includes collaborating on department calendars and the city’s geographic information system, and maintaining the city’s government, tourism, and library websites. What’s his favorite part of his job? “I like maintaining the websites.”

TALON asked Kotyk for a picture, but he declined. (Hint: if you want to see Kotyk, go to city commission meetings.)
