Soccer Banquet caps memorable Season

by David Edward Albright, TALON

The Aztec High School Boys Soccer Team capped a memorable season with their annual banquet on Tuesday, November 13th, 2018. Players, families and coaches gathered at the Aztec High Multi-Purpose room for a special evening of awards and recognition of high achievement for a fun to watch team. TALON spoke with District Coach of the Year, Stephen Parks, by phone from Houston, Texas over the Thanksgiving break.

Parks said the event held at the AHS Multi-Purpose Room was well-attended with most all varsity and junior-varsity players and their families there. "I felt like we finished on a really good note...after thirteen years of not making the state playoffs (and making it this year)...and it's always an honor to be recognized by the other coaches...it's something you really appreciate---it's pretty humbling," Parks said. This was his final season after fifteen years at the high school level and dedicating tremendous time and effort to coaching---since the age of nineteen.

Awards were abundant to a team that surpassed expectations. District 1-4A First Team honors went to: forward Angelo Lucero, midfielder Francisco Villegas, defenders Carson Collins and Karson Adcock and goalie Ethan Magee. Magee was named District Player of the Year. Pedro Lucero, Gabe Vargas, Kolton Bruhn, Dylan Sexton and Brandon Walters were named to District 1-4A Second Team. Receiving Honorable Mention were: Malakai Garcia, Tim Smith, Trent Ketring and Zane Chapman.

Receiving All-Academic District 1-4A Awards for maintaining a 3.0 grade point average or higher during the season were: Carson Collins, Karson Adcock, Raymond Chapman, Anthony Duncan, Malakai Garcia, Trent Ketring, Pedro Lucero, David Miller, Juan Nunez, Caleb Olsen, Dylan Sexton and John Carlos Travenner. Congratulations to the Tigers for a great season!
