"We share the love, after all love is about giving," said Aztec Community Center Director Cindy Iacovetto. This year's free Thanksgiving Day Feast hosted by the Aztec Community Center (ACC) served mouth-watering turkey and all the fixin's to 300 hungry local folks. ACC mostly volunteer crew delivered another 40 meals to those hard-working Safeway employees and some home-bound seniors. According to Iacovetto, "It's so important that we have this event for a lot of different reasons; for some people there are economic reasons, they simply don't have the money to purchase everything for a big meal, or they don't have any family that is close or they don't have any family left at all. But it is not just about sharing a meal, it's about sharing fellowship within the community, that is what is really important." Celebrating her eighth annual Thanksgiving Feast as ACC Director Iacovetto skillfully orchestrated the controlled chaos that goes into creating and presenting the incredible spread, "I always do the desserts and the relish trays," Iacovetto told TALON in a recent phone interview. This year Iacovetto had the help of nearly 20 volunteers including Mayor Victor Snover. Volunteers did everything from food preparation to deliveries, serving up the food and washing dishes. According to Iacovetto, the expertise of city employee and Community Center Head Chef Connie Hutcheson is invaluable in making the annual event a success. Of the volunteers Iacovetto said, "From the cooking to the serving and the cleaning-up it's an opportunity to give back to the community." The groceries that went into the feast were entirely donated by City of Aztec employees, local seniors and 8, 20 pound turkeys were donated by the good people at our local Safeway. Safeway store Director Kelly Davis said, "We just wanted to support the community anyway we can."
