"The Aztec Ruins is honored to play a role in the celebrations on December 7th," said Lead Park Ranger Danielle York. "This night is all about light and the power of the community coming together." The Evening of Lights at the ruins is part of the citywide celebration, Aztec Sparkles. For their part, the ruins will have a couple hundred luminarias in front of the Visitor Center, and LED lights on the ruins themselves. Friends of the Aztec Ruins will provide cookies and hot cocoa for visitors. York said parking might get tight, but they'll have a parking crew to help drivers. The Evening of Lights starts at 6 pm and ends at 8 pm.

The following night floats decorated according to a "Vintage Christmas" theme will roll down Main Street. See aztecnm.com for float entry details. After the parade, Mayor Victor Snover will light the Christmas tree in the southeast corner of Minium Park.

All of December will have bright nights. Starting Monday December 3rd, Aztec is hosting a citywide lighting contest. Any Aztec utility customer who decorates their house or business with lights has a chance to win. Each week will have a people's choice winner, for a total of eight winners (four businesses, four homes.) In addition to a $250 utility credit, winners will also receives plaques at the January 8th city commission meeting. See http://www.aztecnm.com for contest details.

Last year Aztec Feed and Supply, owned by Mike and Sandy Waybourn, won first place. They also own Soaps on Main. What does it take to win? "Creativity," said Waybourn (Sandy.) While she'll have to decorate both stores this year she said, "I just enjoy doing it....To me it's just a community event for the locals."
