Aztec High Soccer - A Proud Season

by David Edward Albright, TALON

Saturday, November 3, 2018 the Tigers battled Hope Christian in Albuquerque to a tie in regulation --- then moved on to the next round with after a 1-0 shoot-out win.

Coach Stephen Parks said with Hope's best player, one of the top in the state, was not on the field, "It kind of threw us off a little bit...so we had to figure how to change things up". In the second half the Tigers came out with a more "offensive stategy", but the momentum went "back and forth".

After regulation play with no goals by either team and two scoreless ten-minute overtime periods, the defensive battle went into a shoot-out. After seven shooters turn their turn from the penalty mark, Tim Smith blasted in the winning PK shot. Parks said his goalie, Ethan Magee, was a crucial to the win by making many "great stops" throughout the game and the shoot-out. "Our goalie really did a great job for us today and saved us several times."

Regarding their next opponent, number two-seated Albuquerque Academy, Parks said, "We're expecting them to be extremely tough and put a lot of pressure on."

Indeed, the Tigers faced a formidable opponent on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Bernalillo Soccer Complex. A perennial soccer powerhouse, Albuquerque Academy showed a very disciplined, highly-skilled team, who passed with precision and pushed hard offensively.

Coach Parks said, "Albuquerque Academy is just a great team...they execute well out on the soccer field...they just have a good, overall team." "Our boys --- they fought, they played hard...we just didn't have it in us today, I guess." But he is --- and Aztec soccer fans can be --- super proud of their team. He said 2005 was the last time an Aztec Boys Soccer team made it to state. He told his team he was extremely proud of their effort, progress, and accomplishments. "We told the kids you helped move this program forward...by what you did --- it creates excitement...an atmosphere that kids want to be a part of."
