AHS Players Selected for Pro. Brass Ensemble

By Jacque Ritchie, TALON

On Sunday December 9, Aztec will experience a rare holiday treat. The Best Brass of Christmas Ensemble will perform at AHS in a special "Keeping Aztec Stronger" benefit concert. The performance begins at 2:00 p.m. at the AHS Multipurpose Space, donations are accepted at the door. All proceeds will go directly to Aztec Municipal School District Foundation in support of the families involved in the Decembeer 7, 2017 AHS tragedy.

Formed in 2007, the 11 piece Best Brass of Christmas Ensemble has presented concerts in Durango, Farmington, Albuquerque, Los Alamos, Santa Fe and Cortez. The ensemble is made up of seasoned professional musicians from New Mexico, Washington and Colordao.

For this very special event five AHS marching band members have been selected to join the ensemble. The student include; Aedan Wells on trumpet, Aidrian Quintana on trumpet, Charlotte Martin on trombone, Alexis Acrey on horn, Ferran Mendieta on tuba. The student musicians were chosen for their exceptional level of musical acumen. "They were very excited and honored to be chosen to play," said AHS Band Director Rian Chiaravalloti.

According to Chiaravalloti the experience of playing with professional musicians should prove an eye-opening one for the students, "Well, these are high school kids you know so...I am sure once they get up there and are actually playing alongside professionals and they start hearing what's happening, it's a whole different level... then they will say, 'Wow, these guys are really good!'" Chiaravalloti will conduct the students alongside the ensemble for the program's centerpiece selection of "Stand in the Light." The piece chosen to honor Paco and Casey was written and recorded by Jordon Smith, season nine winner of "The Voice."

It's been a busy semester for the Tiger Band. As reported in TALON, on October 20, the AHS Tiger band marched to victory at state. Competing against 27 other Division 1A schools, AHS won best in brass, woodwind, percussion and overall at the New Mexico Pageant of Bands in Albuquerque. Will the Tiger Band take part in the annual 'Sparkles Parade' on December 8? Chiaravalloti demured saying, "weather permitting."
