TIGERS SHUTOUT BENGALS

Spectators huddled in their cars watching lightning split the sky above Fred Cook Memorial Stadium on Tuesday night. The storm broke around 6 pm, and the varsity soccer girls from Aztec and Gallup emerged from shelter to warm up before their game. This reporter shivered in a hat, jacket, boots and jeans while the Lady Tigers and Lady Bengals sprinted around in shorts and t-shirts.

The Tigers scored their first goal about 13 minutes into the first half. Roughly a minute and 30 seconds later they followed it with their second goal. Altogether the Tigers scored five goals in the first half. The Tigers kept play mostly on the Bengals' end of the field during both halves of the game.

ALANNA LARKINS #9 RACES TO THE BALL DURING A GAME EARLIER IN THE SEASON.

During the second half of the game, Aztec's goal remained untouched, while the Bengals' goal swallowed five more balls courtesy of the Tigers. The game ended with two minutes to spare: 10-0 Tigers.

It was also senior night, so after the game, senior player Alanna Larkins (#9) stood facing the stands flanked by her parents Jamie and Jeremy Larkins. Senior player Kortney Horn (#16) joined Larkins (Alanna), flanked by her parents Stan and Dana Horn. Both girls have played soccer for the Lady Tigers for five years and are two of the team captains this year. Letters of affirmation to the girls from their parents and Coach Grace Pinckley were read over the loudspeaker. So a cold and wet evening ended in a heart-warming way.
