HOLIDAY SCAMS

TALON STAFF

Tis the season when scammers and poachers call around selling “school sponsorship” posters, flyer’s, calendars, table tents, and tee shirts. This happens every year, and each year there are some local businesses that get caught up in it. The cost isn’t high, most are under $500, and sometimes, if you ask persistently, these callers may eventually tell you the truth:

NONE OF THIS MONEY GOES TO THE SCHOOLS. Which is not very nice.

Of course, as locals and business owners we want to support the schools! In our experience, these poachers play on this desire by offering sponsorship on “the school sports calendar poster,” or on a tee shirt or calendar for a legit sounding organization. I’ve even had them identify themselves as calling from the school, while the phone number clearly shows an out of state number.

DO NOT BE FOOLED! Our research shows that the schools get diddly-squat from these offers. Once in a while, the school “might” get some free copies of the poster or some free tee shirts. In exchange for thousands of your sponsor dollars, but not always. So, what’s a good community oriented business to do?

At TALON, as at some local businesses the rule is simple:

IF a local student walks into the office selling sponsorship, or fundraising, we give.

BUT, if it’s a phone call, these are usually from out of state, we politely decline, as our research has shown these to be predominately scams with the schools getting NOT A PENNY. Just think how nice the TALON sports section could be if these dollars were invested locally and circulated in the local economy instead of going to companies in states scattered all over the map?

Be Informed, Be Aware, Be Prepared.
