YOUR CITY STAFF - ANIMAL SHELTER

Photo and story by Pilar Owens, TALON

"I just felt like I had some spare time to give back to the community," said Tina Roper, Aztec Animal Shelter Director. "I've always loved animals, so I thought this would be a good place to spend some spare time." She started as a volunteer and has worked for the shelter for 15 years now. As director she does paperwork, leads a "multi-talented" staff, talks to the public, and takes care of shelter animals. While Roper said her days vary, she listed some invariable duties; feeding, cleaning, and scooping.

Roper has several dogs and shared two ways owners can help their pets. The first is spay or neuter your pet. Roper said it's a city ordinance, but also "makes them better pets." The second is give as much information to shelter staff as possible if you have to give your pet up for adoption. Shelter staff wants your pet to find a loving home as much as you do; the more information they have, the quicker they can find a good home for the animal.

The shelter needs volunteers, and now that the weather is cold, they need blankets, towels, and old clothes.
