The District 1, Division 4A Aztec Tigers faced the Gallup High School Bengals for a volleyball match-up at Lillywhite Gym at AHS Tuesday. The contest started with the attack of the C-Team led by Coach Vanessa Chavez. Fresh from last weeks surprise victory over Shiprock the C-gals jumped out to an early lead in the first set. The battle was on and competition was tough. Comunication between Tiger players fell off however, as the Bengals took control of the scoreboard. In the end, the Tigers watch silently as an ace serve by Bengal setter Kayle Jones landed unchallenged mid-court for the win. Final score 22-25 Bengals. The second set was no picnic as the Bengals treed our C-Team lady Tigers with a score of 25-12 in the second and final set. Coach Chavez said, "We've been through a little shake-up this week and we missed practice yesterday because of Columbus Day, but the girls never gave up and they were good-sports."

The Junior Varsity Lady Tigers are led by Coach Ericah Boyd. Boyd an AHS graduate (class of 2006) played for Head Coach Anna Strauss before signing on as the JV coach. By phone TALON caught up to JV Coach Boyd on the bus to Miyamura High School for Thursday's grudge-match. How's coaching alongside a long-time mentor working for Boyd? "I actually played varsity as a freshman so Coach Strauss has been a part of my life since I was like 13." Boyd said, "Coach Strauss has been so supportive of me both on and off the court...In this job you are so much more than a coach you are a mentor in life." Tuesday's game against the Bengals was a tough one for the JV squad as well, with our Lady Tigers being defeated in two sets. Going forward Boyd said, "We are going to try a different rotation and get the girls into the positions where they can be the most effective."

The varsity Tiger gals came out with a roar but the Bengals clawed their way to victory in three sets going, 23-25, 21-25, 22-25. The loss leaves our varsity Lady Tigers in fourth place in district play. Coach Strauss said, "They were really close but we fell a little short in the end." After 34 years at AHS Head Coach Anna Strauss has a lot on her roster. Coach Strauss is a gym teacher specializing in yoga instruction, Head Volleyball and Ladies Track Coach and Student Council supervisor. In a telephone interview with TALON Strauss shook off Tuesday's defeat setting her sights on Thursday's match-up with second place Miyamura, "This week we are going to concentrate on the basics, work on our communication and of course, offense."
