Reflecting changes at the state level, since October 1st, Aztec Schools have not been providing over the counter medications like acetaminophen, ibuprofen or cough drops to students. If students need such meds during the school day, their parent or guardian must bring a small unopened, non-expired bottle or package of age appropriate medicine to the school, labeled with the students name and birth date. At the school they’ll also receive a medication authorization form to fill out for their child.

Director of Exceptional Programs for Aztec schools, Jonathan Acrey explained that a change like this “really (allows the schools to focus) on what the root issues of the problem are.” For example, if a student comes to the nurse complaining of a headache, instead of automatically receiving medicine, they’ll be asked questions such as “Have you eaten today?” and “How much water have you had today?”
