Rear Admiral Michael D. Weahkee

RADM Michael D. Weahkee graduated from Aztec High School in 1988. He was active in FBLA, inducted in NHS, captain of the Wrestling Team, placing 3rd in 1988, and ran on the Inaugural Cross earCountry Team. He also graduated with Honors.

After high school he wrestled at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, but after a year decided to pursue his goals from an academic stance. He graduated from San Juan College with an associate's degree in 1991 and enlisted into the United State Air Force. He was deployed as part of Operation Safe Haven to the Republic of Panama where he was recognized with several USAF commendations. He left the Air Force and entered Southern Illinois University where he graduated in 1996 with a BS in Health Care Management. He received both his Master of Health Services Administration and Master of Business Administration degrees from ASU in 1998.

Upon completing graduate studies, Michael was commissioned as a United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps Officer. He received an early promotion to the rank of Captain in 2016, while serving as the Chief Executive Officer at the Phoenix Indian Health Center. In 2017 he was appointed by President Trump as the acting Director of the Indian Health Service, where he is in charge of the health care of approximately 2.2 million American Indians and Alaskan Natives in hospitals, clinics and other health related settings throughout the United States. He was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral in the USPHS on January 1, 2017.

Michael is a second generation AHS graduate. He has had many aunts, uncles, brothers and cousins who attended as well. He is a proud member of the Zuni Tribe. He believes that anyone can accomplish what they desire no matter whom or what they are, if they put in the hard work and ensure that they are ready when opportunity knocks.
