Aztec Schools Hall of Honor

Dr. Justin L. Hazen, MD, FACEP

Dr. Justin Hazen graduated from Aztec High School in 1991 with honors, and he was elected Student Body President. Justin was extremely busy while attending high school. He was in National Honor Society, SADD and PEER Ed. He also lettered in football and track and was an All District selection for the position of center for football twice, all while battling leukemia his senior year. After graduating from high school, an award called the Justin Hazen Middle School Academic Athlete was started in his name.

While attending UNM as an undergraduate, Justin had a relapse with leukemia his junior year, but he still graduated in 1995 with honors and was accepted into UNM School of Medicine. Justin graduated from medical school in 2001 earning the honor of Outstanding Medical Student despite having a third leukemia relapse. He went on to complete an emergency medicine residency and fellowship at UNM. During his residency, Justin found time to graduate from the Department of Energy's SWAT School, be commissioned as an Albuquerque police officer, and has been responding to SWAT and Bomb calls since 2002. He currently works as an attending physician at the VA Hospital and serves as medical director for many fire, police, and EMS agencies in New Mexico. He is an advocate for the Stop the Bleed Campaign, which provides students and teachers free tactical/medical training on how to survive traumatic injuries. One of his crowning achievements has been the development of the Albuquerque Police Department's Tactical Emergency Medical Team that provides tactical emergency medical assistance at any time or place in New Mexico.

Justin has been cancer free since 2000 and resides in Tijeras with his wife Kristi and daughter Addison. He believes a tireless effort helping his community, state, and schools leads to a safer and a better place to live.
