On September 5, Nike, an athletic shoe and clothing industry giant, released a video featuring a number of athletes, including Colin Kaepernick, who narrates the video. The video is part of Nike’s “Dream Crazy” movement. Many people remember former 49ers quarterback Kaepernick for taking a knee during the national anthem before games in 2016. An NFL reporter states that in an August 26, 2016 interview Kaepernick said, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.”

Because of Kaepernick’s involvement in Nike, Aztec School District has chosen to forgo buying Nike uniforms for its sports teams this year. The flag is still meaningful to Superintendent Kirk Carpenter and he believes “this is an issue that we need to stand on.” He emphasized that the district has the right to make choices about what brands to buy. “We’re not saying kids cannot buy Nike cleats,” said Carpenter, because he realizes that Aztec students also have the right to make buying choices. Students are still free to buy and wear Nike clothing.
