Beginning his fifth year as Aztec High Athletic Director, Bryan Sanders was recently honored as Class 5A-AD of the Year for 2016-2017. "I was happy, I was humbled...it's nice to have somebody recognize your hard work and effort...after the year we had last year---especially," Sanders said, about receiving an email from the New Mexico High School Athletic Directors Board on August 20, 2018.

Formerly a principle at McCoy Elementary for five years, Sanders coached football and Wrestling at Aztec High. He also taught physical education, physical conditioning and computer applications.

Asked about the most challenging aspect of his job, Sanders said, "Probably...the time, you know, it takes a tremendous amount of time to be an Athletic Director---there's a lot to it---at the gym, at the field." The events---in all sports---require a tremendous time commitment. "Oh yeah, I'm at stuff pretty much all the time", the AD said.

About the rewards, Sanders said, "I think just being able to celebrate success with kids, watch them be successful... sometimes it's winning, sometimes it's just getting out there and putting the effort forward and playing a good game and walking off with your head held high...the competition and doing what it takes to be successful."

As not only Athletic Director, but also, Activities Director and Assistant Principle, Sanders is beyond busy. "That's what makes it really time-consuming...site scheduling, buses, grade checks, teacher evaluation, student discipline...a whole lotta stuff."

After another long day, TALON caught up with Sanders upon his return from Albuquerque Wednesday evening. "It was great," Sanders said about the Tigers impressive opening season, 49-20, victory last Friday night in Gallup against Miyamura High School. Aztec greets Clovis Friday night at 7 pm for their home opener at Fred Cook Stadium.
