About 9:00 p.m. Friday a loud crash brought concerned neighbors rushing out into the street at Blanco and Mesa Verde in Aztec. Erin Matney age 53, was traveling south on Mesa Verde and allegedly ran the stop sign at Blanco and smashed into a parked SUV owned by resident Jack Scott. The 1995 Mercury that Matney was allegedly driving then ricocheted across the street over a stone wall and into the front yard at 122 North Mesa Verde.

Aztec PD Officer M. Bedonie, Cpl. Anderson, Cpl. Simpson and Officer McKinney responded to the scene and made contact with Matney. Officer Bedonie states in his report, "I could easily smell alcohol coming from her exhaled breath." Allegedly Matney admitted to consuming four shots of 99 Bananas and one Budweiser at around 6:00 p.m. Bedonie observed minor cuts and abrasions on Matney's face, arms, knees and legs. Reportedly, Matney declined medical treatment at the scene.

According to the report, Matney had just left Safeway and said she had dropped a lit cigarette and looked down to retrieve the cigarette and drove onto the lawn. Matney denied hitting Scott's parked vehicle.

Matney allegedly consented to undergo Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. According to the APD report, during the Walk and Turn portion of testing, Matney fell backward onto the curb and hit her head. At this time Bedonie ended the test stating safety concerns for Matney. Medical staff was called and checked Matney before clearing her for transport. At this time Bedonie placed Matney under arrest. At around 10:54 p.m. Matney submitted to a breathalyser test at San Juan County Adult Detention Center (SJCADC). Matney blew a BAC of 0.27, over three times the state's legal 0.08 limit. Matney was booked into SJCADC and charged with, Aggravated DWI, driving on a Revoked Driver's License and driving with No Insurance.
