Mayor of Aztec

By Victor Snover, Mayor of Aztec

I want to use my inaugural Mayor’s Column as an introduction, or re-introduction, of sorts. Future columns will aim to address issues that TALON readers raise, current matters of interest. Perhaps this column will also include some simple observations and musings from my perspective as not only your city’s Mayor, but as a resident of Aztec, or as a teacher at our high school, or even as a father, husband, and grandfather.

My name is Victor Snover, and I am the newest Mayor of Aztec. I was elected to City Commission in March of this year, and subsequently appointed to the two year term as Mayor by the majority of the membership on the Commission. I moved to Aztec originally in August of 2012 from Charleston, WV and taught at the high school for one school year and then subsequently moved back to West Virginia and was a teacher there for two school years. We moved back to Aztec in May of 2015, and fortunately, I was able to return to my teaching position at AHS.

Prior to teaching high school JROTC, I served 22 years in our nation’s military and retired in April of 2012 as a Sergeant First Class in the United States Army. I am a husband, a father to four children, and a grandfather to one amazing grandson. I am very proud and happy to call Aztec, New Mexico my home. Until my recent election to the City Commission, I have never held public office before, and I have discovered that even in a smaller city like ours, the learning curve is quite steep at times, but I believe we are up to the challenge of striving to make our amazing city an even better place to call home.

Moving forward, I hope to be able to offer thoughtful, articulate, and sometimes maybe even insightful ideas, input and answers to topics of interest to our residents. The hope behind a written column in this medium is to encourage more deliberate debate and sharing of ideas and concerns, and a gradual move away from the anonymous social media vortex that can become a toxic echo chamber. I invite you to join me in this movement and welcome you to submit relevant and thoughtful input. Of course, social media is here to stay, and I too will continue to utilize it as a tool to communicate, but I truly believe in the value of print media and the ability to have civil discourse and discussion on any topic or issue.

I am thankful and ever grateful to the support and encouragement that I have received thus far, and while I am certain that I will make mistakes going forward, I will always be honest and as transparent as possible with all of the citizens of Aztec.
