At the July 24 Aztec City Commission meeting Steve Mueller was unanimously voted in as the new City Manager with a base pay of $104,142 annually. "I want to see the city continue to move forward," Mueller said after the vote. Mueller has been working as the city's interim manager since November after the former City Manger Josh Ray resigned to take another city manager position in Lago Vista, Texas. Before resigning Ray had renegotiated his contract for $110,669 after seven years as manager. Ray traveled from North Carolina in 2011 to serve as Aztec City Manager. In Ray's case an executive hiring service was contracted by Aztec to fill the city manager position. According to city sources, Mueller was an 'inside hire' meaning an estimated savings of $40,000 to $60,000 in executive search costs. "Steve has been working as the interim manager and had faithfully fulfilled that obligation...when the commission approached him, he was willing to take the position," said a source close to the hiring process.

Mueller 56, is married and was raised in Texas, he has been working for the city of Aztec for seven years as the city's parks and general services director. Before working for the city, Mueller worked for New Mexico State Parks and in construction.

On Thursday Mueller took time out of his busy schedule telling TALON,"I'm very exicted about the new job and I'm looking forward to working with city staff and the commission...We are gonna do good things."

The city manager's job includes working in concert with department heads, city staff and the commission to complete proposed public works projects. Projects that are currently in the works include the long-anticipated East Aztec Arterial Route and the North Main Extension considered by many as essential to revitalize Aztec's historic downtown corridor.
