Aztec City Attorney Larry Thrower resigned after a remark at the June 12 City Commission meeting, was caught on a ‘hot mike’ and broadcast on the cities You Tube channel. Thrower can be heard saying, “Does this feel a little queer to you?” Thrower’s comment was made to Commissioner Austin Randall during the Aztec Pride Month Proclamation presentation. TALON unsuccessfully tried to contact Thrower and Randall for comment several times on June 13 thru the 15.

Reportedly, Thrower submitted a 30-day notice of resignation within days of the meeting. Thrower served as the cities attorney for almost 13 years. According to Aztec City Clerk-Personnel Administrator Karla Sayler, Thrower was awarded a new four-year contract in 2018, the contract requires annual renewal. For his services Thrower currently recieves $59,892.00 a year or $4,991.00 a month for 40 hours a month. For any excess hours the city is billed $165.00 an hour.

The city attorney is tasked with providing legal advise and opinons to the City Commission and city staff. According to reports, Thrower also prosecuted “hundreds” of cases on behalf of the city including numerous DUI cases.

The city of Aztec is already in the process of hiring a new City Attorney with a tentative contract approval date of August 14, 2018. Interested candidates are required to sumbit a Request for Proposal (RFP) to City of Aztec Procurement Manager Kathy Lamb by June 29. The ‘Offerors’ are initially vetted by Lamb, who then submits reccomendations to the Evaluation Committee. Suitable candidates must be licensed attorneys in good standing, have at least five years experience in public and municipal sectors, possess “a good reputation, be honest and reliable and have integrity.” For more information go to the city’s website in the Bids/Quotes section 2019-662.
