Lara Manzanares,Took album of the year at the New Mexico Music Awards Album of the Year for her album "Land Baby"

Chama/Tierra Amarilla native Lara Manzanares took home the top prize of Album of the Year for her debut release, "Land Baby" at the 2018 New Mexico Music Awards. Manzanares also snagged Best Package Design for the album cover that features her own Rio Grande style weaving, a skill she learned as a child in keeping with her sheep-ranching heritage.

Produced by lead electric guitarist Jono Manson, Land Baby was recorded at Kitchen Sink Studios in Santa Fe. Land Baby includes 12 original tracks, in Spanish and English plus a song-book complete with translations. Manzanares sings lead vocals and plays lead acoustic guitar. Check out Lobito (little wolf) for her 'insect noises.'

Inspired by her Southwestern roots Manzanares music style is a complex mixture of spicy Spanish, traditional Mexican, infused with haunting Native American hues, bluegrass and good old-fashioned rock-and-roll. The bilingual sing-songwriter weaves emotion and comedy into a rich tapestry of cultural resonance that is as funny as it is thought-provoking.

J.K. Brown of Brown's Music in Bloomfield was Manzanares's music teacher during her formative years, "I'm really happy for her that she won this award, that's quite an accomplishment," Brown 84, said proudly in a recent chat with TALON. "I'm not at all surprised, she was always very serious about her music and very inventive."

Since leaving New Mexico at 18, Manzanares has lived and traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe. Drawing her inspiration from the red New Mexican earth Manzanares returned home to write and record Land Baby. Currently, the singer lives in Wisconsin but the good news is that she is performing at La Boca Taberna in Santa Fe on June 28. If you can't make it to that show, no-problemo vato, Manzanares and her band of hard-core troubadors will be back for a five-venue tour of Santa Fe in July and early August.
