Saturday night, June 9th at Koogler Middle School, the Aztec High Tigers and AHS Alumni competed in the 6th Annual Matthew Bardwell Memorial Scholarship Fund no mercy Baseball Game. The AHS Alumini Team consisted of approximately 15 players while the AHS Team of 14 included freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, recent graduates, as well as a few Connie Mac Players lending a hand. The crowd was lighthearted with many cheering for both sides. The evening included outbursts of merriment while the music gently teased at a strike out or a bad pitch such as Toby Keith's "I ain't as good as I once was, I have a few years on me now..." Although the tension of a seasonal game did not linger in the atmosphere, both teams played mercilessly and a good time was had by all. This fair night was reminiscent of the old fashioned baseball games where small communities gathered for an afternoon of camaraderie and sportsmanship with apple pie and watermelon.

This annual baseball game is held to raise money for three scholarships in honor of player #19 Matthew Bardwell who attended Aztec Schools from kindergarten until the spring of his freshman year (1996) when he lost his battle with Leukemia. Although the loss of a child is extraordinarily difficult, his parents Ryan and Tracey Grace have graciously turned their loss into a positive contribution in the community. According to "Matty's" biography on the MBMSF website, "He had a real zest for life, a great sense of humor, loved baseball and excelled in school...was a natural leader, and in true leader fashion, he knew how to follow others and allow them to shine. During Matt's illness, his continued vibrant approach to life inspired those around him to reach higher, push harder, and go beyond the ordinary." The mission of the MBMSF is "to help make it possible for deserving graduating seniors of Aztec High School who exhibit the character and excellence that Matt personified to persue their goals of higher education." In addition, students who may be awarded these scholarships should "display academic excellence, strong citizenship, and (have) a desire to make a meaningful contribution to society."

The Matthew Bardwell Memorial Scholarship Fund Non-Profit organizers are asking for help in making this a permanently endowed fund by making donations to support this mission. Sponsors are always needed for this great cause. AHS Alumni Players are also asked to join the team. Scholarships can be applied for at Aztec High School in the counselors office.
