Angels' Garden & Memorial Ceremony

Every year on the traditional Memorial Day, May 31 at 6 p.m. a ceremony is held at the McCoy Elementary garden honoring Aztec area children who have passed away. The garden is dedicated to those lost, and even children up to age 29 are included.

Part of each year's memorial is a candle-lighting ceremony with the addition of new names to plaques on the indoor Memory Wall, as well as the reading of all the names on the plaques (close to 200 now). Some names have come as suggestions from relatives and friends, some have been found in the Aztec Cemetery, and many have been noticed by their obituaries. Ginny Jones, former McCoy teacher, generally adds the names, in conjunction with Allstar, who creates the plaques. The PTO donates annually to a garden account, which helps to pay for plaques, shrubs, and garden and watering equipment. This year's special project will again be repair and painting the fence and trying to replace the missing banners that carry our children's names.

We also need donations from parents and citizens. You might want to sponsor a name or a banner, or a shrub. Donations may be made directly to the account, through the McCoy office. The McCoy contact is Carol Hatfield, 334-6831.
