Thyroid Balance

In traditional Chinese Medicine health or lack of it comes down to balance. It is in this balancing act that we find a greater sense of our self and realize our very nature is one of Spirit. Running through the meridians of the body are the hormones and enzymes that create a strong immune system and increase energy, improve sleep, reduce anxiety, and much more. Here are four simple steps to heal one of the major endocrine glands, the thyroid.

Foods to eat

Seaweed (kelp, dulse, nori); Cranberries; Navy beans; Eggs; Himalayan crystal salt; Potatoes; Black strap molasses; and Apple cider vinegar. It’s also a good idea to consume beneficial fats, such as: Avocados, Coconut oil, Cod liver oil

In addition to these recommendations, consider foods that clean up the digestive system such as fermented vegetables, kefir, kombucha, and even dark chocolate (please note the emphasis on dark).

Foods to eliminate

Foods that contain goitrogens should be avoided. Goitrogens are naturally occurring anti-nutrients in certain foods that interfere with production of thyroid hormones. Foods to eliminate for a healthier thyroid include: Unfermented soy products (fermented ones such as miso, tempeh are good), raw broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale, spinach, and turnips (cooked or fermented vegetables have the goitrogenic compounds removed), conventional dairy products (organic is acceptable), processed foods (if it has a ingredients label, it has been processed), corn and canola oil.

Avoid radiation

It is difficult to avoid radiation in this time of technology. It comes from EMFs from wifi signals, cell phones, TVs, computers, microwaves, and medical imaging. Radiation is a prevalent threat to everyone and especially those with thyroid issues.

To avoid and neutralize radiation as much as possible, consider the following: Limit exposure to common electronic devices such as cell phones and computers, practice earthing (bare skin touching the earth’s surface such as feet) or use grounding technology, and eat the above mentioned foods which allow radioactive iodine to pass through the body, leaving it unharmed.

Eliminate xenoestrogens

Xenoestrogens are man-made estrogen mimicking molecules that are significant hormone disruptors. These chemicals and disruptors create the imbalances that eventually can cause a decrease in the flow of our hormones.

Examples of xenoestrogens, which should be avoided, include: plastic containers, styrofoam cups and containers, cosmetics and toiletries, agricultural chemicals, non-organic meat and dairy.
