Chamber Chatter

We had almost 80 visitors from out of town this past month at the Chamber. France, Holland, Germany and Canada were all represented along with 18 different states. Eight different groups of tourists came to us from Colorado.

THE BOOK NOOK News from your local Aztec library

50TH Anniversary of the Aztec UFO crash. The library will be sponsoring a symposium on this event on Memorial Day, May 25, 1998, with all proceeds going to benefit the proposed Aztec Family Center (the new Library!).

Emory Minium Plaza Fund

Emory Minium was well known in the area as Mr. Aztec. He was a local business man, owning and operating Navajo Novelty for 38 year and a civic leader as well, serving as the Mayor of Aztec and as a City Commissioner...and one of the original Old Sore Heads....The harshest thing he ever said about anyone was to call them a rascal or scoundel. It was a sad day when he passed away on November 17 ,2002...a fund to honor Emory will be used to purchase a bronze plaque and construct a concrete base and...will be installed in the courtyard plaza ....by Rubio's Restaurant. The plaza will be dedicated and named Minium Plaza.

Singing America's History- Local News

Fifth-grade students at Park Elementary practice a rousing chorus of the World War II soldiers' song, "Gee, Ma, I Want To Go Home." ...The students presented an assembly program, "Through the Decades of the Twentieth Century"...This is the eighth year that Jane Voss and Hoyle Osborne have contributed their knowledge...in music with the classes of Tina Edwards and Sherry Magee.

Toys from the 50's

The students in Dana Reed's 5th grade class have put together a '50's toy display ...exhibit at the Aztec Museum. Their theme is "Under the Tree in the 1950's"...Amosandra, a doll based on a famous radio personality in the 40's and 50's was Dana Reed's favorite toy. Amosandra was a black, rubber, drinking and wetting doll. Not many black dolls were made during this time , so she is quite unusual.
