Leroy Bussell

June 8, 1926 - March 20, 2018


Leroy Bussell, 91, formerly of Aztec, NM, died Tuesday morning March 20, 2018 in Aurora, CO at the home of his granddaughter. Born June 8, 1926 in Brodhead, Rockcastle County, KY, he was the son of Elmer and Bertha Brummett Bussell.

He enlisted at 17 during WWII and served in the Pacific Theater with the 96th Infantry Division, “Deadeyes.” He was wounded in the battle for the island of Okinawa receiving the Purple Heart. He was discharged from the Army and re-enlisted in the Army Air Corps. After the war he went to drywall school and owned his own companies in Indianapolis, IN as well as Albuquerque and Farmington, NM. He helped charter and served as Commander for VFW Posts in Albuquerque, Farmington, and Aztec, NM. He was the last of his family, being preceded by his father and mother, one sister, and one brother.

Surviving are his daughter Linda Scott, of Stuart, FL and his son Kenneth Bussell and daughter-in-law of Washington, IN. Also surviving are five grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, plus numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10am on Monday, March 26 at Cope Memorial Chapel of Aztec, 405 S. Main Ave., 505-334-9332. Burial will be at 9am on Tuesday, March 27 at Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
