The Aztec Economic Development Board (EDAB) met at their regular time, Thursday, Jan. 18, 8 am at the Aztec HUB incubator. The meeting was called to order by Chairman John Faverino. Minutes from past meeting were approved, and Susan Aguirre of Lil’ Aztec Flower Shop was introduced as the business guest. Susan mentioned paint touch ups on Main, and an idea for murals to improve ambiance. Susan also requested that the City look for ways to slow traffic on Main coming from Bloomfield to encourage pedestrians and increase safety. Some ideas were tossed around including yield to pedestrian signage, slower speed limit, adding a stoplight, and enforcement presence. The idea was well received but tabled for future discussion.

Steven Saavedra, City of Aztec discussed an overlay district for the N. Main extension project. The overlay district would allow property owners to work with the city to create development guidelines that align with the community’s goals. A workshop would likely be scheduled in February to discuss the item further.

Some discussion was made as to LEDA funding which may be available to existing businesses to help expand operations.

Other development topics included recruitment efforts aimed at chains, and ideas in support of local businesses. Taco Bell, Taco Cabana, and other chain type businesses were discussed. The consensus seem to be to put more lines in the water.

Reports on updated traffic count, and gross receipts were unavailable at this time.
