A regular municipal election will be held on March 6, 2018 at Aztec City Hall at 201 W. Chaco, Aztec. Polls will open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m. Three Commissioner seats are up for grabs: District #2, District #4 and District #5. Commissioners are elected for four-year terms and are paid $800 a month out of the city's general fund.

In Aztec, the position of mayor and mayor pro-tem are chosen from within the sitting body by their fellow commissioners. Current Aztec Mayor Sally Burbridge (District #2) has declined to seek another term. The newly elected and sitting commissioners will choose Burbridge's replacement from within their ranks following the March election.

The mayor receives $1000 a month and the mayor pro-tem is paid $850 a month in compensation for their service.

The commissioners typically attend two meetings a month and occasional special meetings. Duties include working with the cities department heads to craft and enact comprehensive city policy and municipal works projects.

All precincts are consolidated for the regular municipal elections, so voters registered within the city limits can cast a ballot for any candidate regardless of district.

Any person interested in running for city commission must file a Declaration of Candidacy on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 with the Municipal Clerk's office located at city hall, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

To vote in the regular municipal election anyone 18 years-of-age or older can register with the San Juan County Clerk by Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at 5:00 p.m.

Applications for absentee ballots may be obtained from the office of the Municipal Clerk and must be completed and accepted by the Municipal Clerk on or before March 2, at 5:00p.m. Absentee ballots may be delivered by mail or hand delivered by the voter or a caregiver or immediate family member. Absentee ballots will be accepted until 7:00 p.m. on March 6, 2018.

Early voting will begin on Wednesday, February 14 until Friday, March 2, 2018. Early voting will be conducted using paper ballots in the Municipal Clerk's Office.

All candidates for municipal office are invited to address the community in the TALON. Let the voters know what your platform is. What is your unique vision for the future of Aztec? Submissions can be up to 400 words and must include; name, address and phone number.
