Aztec Schools

December 15, 2017

As a school and district, we want to send out a sincere thank you to each family, business member and the entire community of Aztec for the outpouring of support during this very difficult time. As a school family we have leaned on each other and your support gives us the strength to persevere.

Following is the schedule for students and families to reenter AHS.

We want to respect and honor our students who perished in this tragedy by providing time for students and staff to mourn and attend services. God bless both of these students and their families.

Another consideration we must make is that our students need a sense of normalcy. One way to achieve this is by reentering their school and continuing with their normal activities. We recognize that this is not a “one size fits all” approach. Every individual student and family will have processed this event in their own unique way.

Each one’s needs will be individual. We respect and understand that. Rest assured that counseling and support services will remain available for staff and students, for as long as there is a need. It is for this reason that we are trying to make sure that we allow families the opportunity to also be a part of this reintegration plan. With this being said, we also know that some students will not be ready to come back until after Christmas break and we will continue to support them after this time as well. Students and families and their needs are the number one concern and focus for us.

Yet another thing we must consider is the construction progress in the buildings which were affected. We want to provide our students with the best possible learning environment that will help promote healing.

We hosted an Aztec Strong meeting for our students on Thursday December 14, 2017 from 1:00 – 3:00 and will have another one as well. We will also plan for continued counseling for families and students which will continue throughout next week, during break, and after students return after Christmas Break.

Given these and many other considerations, following is the schedule for reentry to AHS.

Wednesday, December 20, 2017

• Continued Counseling support at the Exceptional Programs for students and families

We want to focus on healing and renewal for students as we bring the semester to a close. Aztec High School has requested and received a waiver for state required end of course exams. Teachers will provide students with the opportunity to complete outstanding work and all other assignments in order to bring the semester to a close. Students who do not return until after Christmas break will have the same opportunity as well. Again we understand that some students may not be ready to return and that is why we are providing different options for them to help them and their families with this overall incident. We will continue with supports for family, students and staff after the New Year as well.

As another important part of our healing and moving forward, we will be repurposing two classrooms in our 900 building and turning them into a new learning lounge for our students. This area will be a tribute to Casey and Francisco who will forever be a part of our schools and will always be Aztec Tigers. We will allow the students of Aztec High School to name this area, because this is their school and their area and we feel it is only right to have them be an important part of this process.

Again, thank you for the continued support from our community, the county and state for helping us move forward. We not only see the support we feel it. God Bless Casey’s and Francisco’s family for their loss and God bless the Aztec Tigers! As I have stated many times, we need to remember that this is our high school, our district and our community. We are the Aztec Tigers and we are AZTEC STRONG!!!!!
