A land-use hearing will be held on Tuesday, December 12 at 6 PM at City Hall. At the hearing, residents will have the opportunity to weigh in on a proposed zoning change. The property located at 308/312 Main Street (just south of Miss Gails’ Inn) was recently purchased. The new property owner wants to build a four-plex on the site. Although the property sits in a commercial corridor it is currently zoned R1 (single family dwellling). The new owner has requested a zoning change to R2 (multi-family dwellings). At the hearing, Aztec Community Development Director Steve Savaadra plans to give a presentation that will include his reccomendation on the matter. In a December 6 telephone interview with the TALON Savaadra declined to say what his reccomendation would be but he did state, “I believe it is important that the public has the opportunity to state their position either for or against (the proposed zone change) before the process is complete, because after construction begins it’s too late to start complaining.”

According to Savaadra all land-owners within 100 ft of the property are considered “interested parties” and have been sent registered letters outlining the proposed changes. At the hearing these interested parties will have the first opportunity to address the city commission about their concerns/opinions, followed by the public at large. At that time the matter will be up for a vote by the city commissioners.
