FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

November 3, 2017

Tiger fans, you’re in for a real treat this week, no trick to it. Aztec played at Gallup last Friday and Coach Matthew Steinfeldt agreed to present this week’s football update. Take it away Coach:

Friday’s game at Gallup was a chance for us to regroup and highlight the youth in our program. As injuries continue to mount for our Tigers, young players had the chance to step up and start for the varsity. Nine of our twenty-two starters are either freshmen or sophomores. In addition, five starting roles were filled by juniors. Josh Cowden has started the entire season at nose tackle but found out twenty minutes before game time that he would start at offensive guard as well. Josh did a phenomenal job stepping up and our offense didn’t skip a beat in large part due to his performance. Brian Tapia, Darian Valdez, and Javier Valdez all made starts on offense and provided receptions that moved the ball down field.

Cowden played a significant role anchoring the defensive line. Underclassmen dominated the secondary for the Tigers led by Zach Taylor. Other underclassmen in the secondary included Tapia, Valdez, Alex Parra, Levi Cole, and Javier Valenzuela (who added an interception).

This game provided us with the opportunity to add a win and to prepare for our regular season finale vs Miyamura. The playoffs come a week early for us this season. The boys know that a win cements a second place finish in district with a 4-1 record and extends our season into the 5A playoffs.
