On Oct. 12, the Aztec School Board met for their regular monthly meeting. All members were present except Board President Wayne Ritter.

Fundraisers approved during the meeting included three projects for the Aztec High School Educators Rising. Those included Double Good Popcorn Sales, Aspen Leaf Yogurt and Butter Braids Pastries. The group will use the proceeds to travel to their annual conference.

Three groups of students were approved to travel for school purposes. Those groups were: 26 students from Koogler Middle School going to the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History; members of the AHS Key Club traveling to the SW District Key Club Fall Rally in Prescott, AZ; and members of the American Indian group traveling to Flagstaff to tour Northern Arizona University.

The Board had a lengthy discussion of a policy change proposed by Mr. Rocky Torres and Dr. Warman Hall, Principals at Vista Nueva High School and AHS respectively, in regards to requirements for graduation. The principals told the board that attendance of seniors in their last semester severely declines, and that they would like to add an attendance requirement, with a probation clause, to make regular attendance a priority for walking with their class during the graduation ceremony. The board will review the change and vote at a later date.

The only action item on the agenda was a request for early graduation from a student at Vista Nueva High School. The student is a junior this year, and would like to graduate a year early. At the end of this year, she will have all the credits she needs to graduate. In addition, she will be close to having the credits for an associates degree from San Juan College. The Board voted to approve the early graduation.
