Mr. Carpenter presented Judge Gray with a Tiger jacket, a plaque and a lifetime sports pass at the School Board Meeting

The Aztec School Board held their monthly meeting on Sept. 14. All board members were present, including President Wayne Ritter, Vice-President Roger Collins, and members Ryan Lane, Jimmy Dusenbery and Fran Dobey.

All action items were approved by the board with unanimous votes.

Highlights of the meeting;

• Judge Gray received special recognition from the Board for this program that helps students in Aztec. First time offenders in Judge Gray's court are offered the opportunity to donate school supplies or clothing in exchange for fines. Gray received a Tiger jacket, a plaque and a lifetime sports pass.

• Shantel Cooper gave a presentation on the Volunteer Incentive Program (VIP), a way for school groups to raise funds for their organizations. The VIP program is currently being used in Farmington with great success.

• Members of the Aztec Shotgun Team updated the Board on their recent awards (See Page 1).

• Koogler Middle School FFA's fundraiser was approved and will be "Kiss A Pig," which they hope will raise $1000.

• Travel was approved for AHS JROTC to go to Chimney Rock, and Durango to help clean up along the Animas River as a service project. Travel was also approved for the AHS Native American Education group to travel to Albuquerque and Crownpoint for several different programs.

• Two revisions were approved for the Board Policies, and included one pertaining to staff grievances and one to student safety.

• Principals of each the schools discussed the school grading system used by the state at length, and have plans to make changes that will bring the grades up.

The next regular meeting of the Aztec School Board will be held on Oct. 12 at the Board Room of the District Central Office Building, 1118 W. Aztec Blvd., beginning at 6 pm. The public is always invited to attend.
