Artifact of the Week

by Jordan Taher, Special to TALON

This machine was used to put the Utton's Dairy bottle caps onto the glass milk bottles prior to delivery. Alfred Utton opened Utton's Dairy in Aztec in 1947. Starting with just 5 cows, the milk was originally delivered door to door by the dipper-full. However, the business steadily grew in relation to Aztec. As they gained more customers, they transitioned to glass milk bottles that were delivered daily. At one point, the Dairy even operated 10 trucks and served 1,200 people! After 42 years of successful business, the last delivery was made in 1989. Many of the Utton's Dairy items are on display at the Aztec Museum. Drop by any time Tuesday – Saturday, 9 AM – 4 PM to learn more about the Utton's Dairy and other great Aztec businesses!
