Kids Eat Free

Yes, that is right ... kids eat free at four of our six schools this next school year. Thanks to some great work by our Comptroller, Ms. Malinda Fowler, who found out that more than one school qualified for the grant, students at Lydia Rippey, McCoy, Park Avenue and Vista Nueva will all be able to eat breakfast and lunch for free over the next three years. No catch, no paperwork, all you have to do as parents is send them to school. The program is called the “Community Eligibility Program” and is a Federal grant program that our community qualifies for and will be able to participate in over the next four years. We are excited about this program and even though it is a reimbursement based initiative, meaning that we will be reimbursed on the number of meals served, we believe that more students will be able to take advantage of the great meals provided by Chartwells, our contracted food service. It is a win-win situation. A hungry student is one that will not be able to concentrate, and that is not good for the student and their ability to learn. There will be no applications that parents have to worry about filling out, or any other paperwork. Again, all they have to do is have their children take advantage of this free program. The quality and quantity of the food will be no different than what our students already enjoy, so we encourage parents who have students at these sites to take advantage of the program.

Unfortunately students who attend Koogler Middle School and Aztec High School do not qualify for the program. Eligibility was determined by meeting a certain economic threshold and only the four schools indicated met that mark. As parents, it is a great opportunity to have your student receive a nutritious meal and for you to save money because you do not have to pay for or provide a meal for them at school. If you have any questions about this program please call us at 334-9474. We will be glad to talk to you about this in more detail.

Administrative Changes

We are less than a week away from the beginning of the school year and are excited about having all of our students and staff together again. We have made a couple of administrative changes as we will have a new Principal at Park Avenue, with Ms. Lauren Laws taking over. She was formerly the Assistant Principal there. Her new assistant principal will be Ms. Phyllis Cox, who has spent sixteen years in our district as a teacher, and will now join the administrative ranks. Ms. Fernandez, the former principal at Park Avenue, will still be in the district, but will move to Koogler Middle School as an Assistant Principal to fill the vacated position from the retirement of Mr. Don Fritz. Finally we will also be hiring a new Director of Finance as Mr. Gary Martinez will be retiring to take a position in Colorado. We thank him for the great job he has done and wish him all the best. Another great year is on its way and we can’t wait for our students to get here.
