Q. Why are we reversing the beautification of the town? The library’s mature shrubs all yanked! One median outside Safeway on Main now has only trees, no flowers.

A. Steve Mueller, City of Aztec Parks & Rec Director, said the city is trying to move toward more low maintenance landscaping, and going from annuals to perennials so the plants don’t have to be replaced every year. He also said the shrubs at the library were going into a “downward spiral” before they were removed.

As for the median, lower maintenance again comes into play, and also pedestrian traffic. Some of the taller shrubs on the median were causing some difficulty in seeing oncoming traffic when trying to walk across the street.
