County Commissioners, in their meeting of July 11, tabled action on funding to replace the bridge on County Road 5500, in Lee Acres. According to Fran Fillerup, Public Works Administrator for the county, a public meeting was being held on June 13 at McGee Park. Commissioners chose to wait until after that meeting to take any kind of action. The bridge has currently been downgraded from 22 ton capacity to 13 tons. That weight limit will cause most school buses, fire trucks, commercial carriers and large farm equipment to implement a detour. Fillerup said in addition to the weight limits, there are other safety issues with the bridge including its narrow width and poor guard rails. Commissioners are expected to discuss funding for the bridge at their next regular meeting.
