ARTIFACT OF THE WEEK

Aztec Museum

This leather postcard was addressed to Miss Bessie Rivers and was sent in June of 1907 from an unidentified friend in Iowa. Miss Bessie Rivers was a rather famous Madame in Durango, CO during the early 1900s. While Bessie was renowned for her fairness in business, her parlor, The Horseshoe Saloon, was known for its elegance and opulence. Dinner at her saloon would be served on fine china by candlelight and would often feature 5 courses paired with rare wines. In addition to her refined tastes, this postcard suggests that she had quite a good sense of humor and reminds us of the unique character of the person behind the legend.
