THE PROPERTIES AT 104 AND 112 SIMONDS ROAD WERE RE-ZONED AT THE CITY COMMISSION MEETING

Aztec City Commissioners approved two zone changes when they met on Tuesday, June 27. Both of the properties are located on Simonds Road and also needed variances approved, to go along with the zone changes. Pete Blea owns the property at 104 Simonds Road, and Venus Properties LLC, represented by Barry Goldberg, owns the property at 112 Simonds Road. Both properties have requested a zone change from C2 for general commercial and wholesale be changed to MH for mobile homes. Both properties are .11 acre and have existing homes on them. In 2011, the Blea property was granted a Special Use Permit, which will not transfer to a new owner they decide to sell. They would also not be able to rebuild if the home was ever destroyed by fire, flood or other causes. The requested zone change would allow the property owners to rebuild their homes or to sell the property. Because the existing setbacks of the homes don't fit into the MH zoning, and the properties are smaller than the code calls for, variances were requested to allow the smaller setbacks that currently exist. Commissioners voted 4-0 to approve both zone changes and the variances for both properties.

Commissioners also voted to approve a resolution to continue construction of the East Aztec Arterial. The road is be constructed across BLM lands, and the BLM requires right of way agreements for surface, underground and overhead infrastructure, according the the staff summary. Although the surface right of way has been secured, the city must make separate application for each of the utilities to be installed. This resolution will give the City Manager the authority to sign applications for the lengthy process.

The Aztec City Commission meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. The next scheduled meeting will be July 11. All meetings are held in the Commission Room at City Hall.
