Shrek (played by Jordan Grant) contemplates Princess Fiona during recent performance

If you have company for the weekend, or even if you don't, Sandstone's summer production of Shrek The Musical is a fun way to spend a couple of hours.

Just in case you haven't had a chance to see the movie that this production is based on, it's a story of an ogre, a princess, a king and a wisecracking donkey, a whole lot of "fairy tale misfits," and, what show wouldn't be complete without a fire breathing dragon!

Shrek, the ogre, is sent on an adventure to rescue Princess Fiona and bring her back to the king. His reward, as promised by King Farquaad, will be the return of his beloved swamp, which has been taken over by the fairy tale characters who have been banished from the kingdom.

Along the way to rescue the princess, Shrek meets up with Donkey, who entertains, or annoys, him during his adventure, and who, by the way, just might have been my favorite character.

The show can be seen at the Lions Wilderness Amphitheater in Farmington on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights through July 29. The cast, along with the director, stage managers, sound people, lighting people, costume designers, choreographers, and all the other behind-the-scenes staff, all come to the production with a long list of experience, and it shows!

Shrek The Musical is so much fun, and not so much expensive, with adult tickets only $12. You can also go hungry and have dinner, provided nightly by A'viands from San Juan College (burgers or BBQ sandwiches), and wine and beer are available on Friday and Saturday evenings. There's also popcorn of course, candy, and cold drinks. And they even provide cans of OFF to keep the mosquitos away!
