Artifact of the Week

This small Common Prayer book belonged to Reverend C. E. Buelt in 1899 (the hand written name was difficult to read, if you know any information regarding this artifact, please contact the Aztec Museum). At only 2 inches tall, its small size made it perfect for travel. In the 1800s and into the 1900s many preachers and reverends would travel from town to town delivering their sermons. These circuit preachers were particularly valuable to small, developing communities such as Aztec. Traveling preachers provided not only spiritual comfort, but a deepened sense of community for early pioneering families in an otherwise harsh and wild territory.
