Aztec's Centennial Spoon

In 1950 Aztec was a thriving town bursting with civic pride. It is no coincidence, then, that the town of Aztec celebrated the 100th anniversary of New Mexico becoming a territory by ordering commemorative items such as this spoon. New Mexico became a territory in 1850 under the Compromise of 1850 which determined the area as worthy of federal protection and exploration, but did not grant it the same rights as statehood. However, 72 years later New Mexico achieved statehood status in 1912. Today we remember the anniversary celebrations through our artifacts, such as this commemorative spoon engraved for our town.
