Waiting to start the race

Saturday, May 6th marked the 17th annual Alien Mountain Bike Race sponsored by Aztec Trails and Open Spaces (ATOS).

This annual favorite brought over 100 riders hoping to get the best trail running time in their category.

The fully sanctioned USA cycling event offered categories for Pro, Cat 1, Cat 2, Single Speed, Cat 3 and kids divisions.

Each rider challenged their strength and stamina on the Alien Run trail located on BLM land off of CR 2270 just outside of Aztec. Expert level riders began the event for the day, riding an almost 30 mile trek and taking them 3 laps around the Alien trail course. Each subsequent category took a shorter trail route and started at a later time.

This is the first year start times were separated by category. One of the organizers Bryan Vincent stated the change was "..for more convenience and less starting line traffic".

Trophies awarded after the event were in true alien fashion. First place winners in each category received a hefty green metal alien crafted by local artists from Aztec Machine Shop. Proceeds from the event will help ATOS expand and upgrade Aztec's already extensive trail system with the hope that members of our community will get out and walk, run or ride on these trails.

Organizer Wallace Begay stated that these trails and open spaces "...add quality of life for members of our community," When the Alien trail system was first created it was marked off with barb wire fence and a gate. ATOS now offers clearly marked directions, historic plaques, and even a marker of where the namesake UFO, reportedly crashed in 1948.

A fun day for riders of all levels.
