AHS Tiger Baseball Team

What a week for the Aztec Tiger Baseball team! The first game of the week was a thrilling 5-4 victory over the Farmington Scorpions. With that win there was a three way tie for the district title between the Tigers, Scorps, and the Miyamura Patriots. Each team had two more games to play to finish out the district schedule with both the Tigers and Scorps having to play Miyamura.

The second game of the week for the Tigers was a lopsided 15-1 victory over the Gallup Bengals. That same day the Scorps lost to the Patriots which set up a district title game between the Tigers and Patriots for their last game of the regular season.

Kyler Duggins at Bat vs. Miyamura

Baseball fans couldn't have asked for a better district title game! It was 7 intense innings ending in a dramatic walk off win in favor of the Tigers. The first two innings went scoreless with both teams stranding runners on base. The Patriots busted it open in the top of third and piled on 5 runs, in what seemed to be a momentum shift, but the Tigers had a different plan. With two outs and a runner on, Tiger Dustin Sipe blasted a two run homer to put the Tigers on the board. The Patriots would not score any runs for next three innings thanks to errorless defense behind pitcher Zach Taylor. The Tigers added two runs in the fourth with a bunt by Chad Hill to score Sebastian McNeil and a sac fly by Derick Jung to score Kyler Duggins. The Tigers added another run in the 6th when a Jung hit allowed Duggins to score and tie it up. In the top of the 7th, the Patriots scored one run putting them ahead. The Tigers headed into the dugout in the bottom of the 7th down to their last three outs and needing one run to tie it up to extend the game or two runs to win! The Patriots got two quick outs, bringing Sebastian McNeil to the plate for a chance to get something started for the Tigers. McNeil hit a double giving the Tigers hope. The task of scoring McNeil was left up to senior Spencer Heyden, who delivered with a shot over the center fielder's head for a double of his own to score McNeil and tie up the game. Still down to their final out and Heyden on second, senior Kyler Duggins stepped in and ripped the ball to score Heyden. The Tigers win 7-6 over the Patriots bringing the district title back to Aztec after a 19 year drought. The ending couldn't have been written any better for Tiger Seniors Spencer Heyden and Kyler Duggins. The Tigers received the five seed into the first round of the State Championship playoffs and will play at home a best of three game series against seed twelve Santa Teresa on Friday, May 5, 10 am, and Saturday, May 6, 10 am, for a chance to advance to the State Championship bracket in Albuquerque May 11-13. Come out and cheer on your Tigers!
