Aztec High School hosted the Aztec Varsity Invitation Golf Tournament Monday, April 17 at Aztec Municipal Golf Course. Durango, Miyamura, Farmington, Shiprock and Kirtland were all represented at this tournament.

It was a beautiful day for a tournament. Starting at 9 am, the weather was warm and sunny with the grass just starting to turn green. The weather stayed calm until after lunch when the wind started to pick up. Even with the little bit of wind, all participants did well. Three of the competitors scored a leg for State, one of them was Aztec's own, Linda Peralta with an 88. Aztec Girls Varsity not only won this tournament, but also scored themselves a leg for State with a team score of 324. The winning boys team from Farmington High School was just behind the girls with a team score of 326.

This tournament was not only a great competition, but also practice for the upcoming District and State competitions. With only two more competitions, Aztec still has girls trying to get legs for the State competition. The girls team, consisting of Linda Peralta, Isabelle Peralta, Emilee Wood, Madysen Current and Shelby Bradford, has qualified for State, with an average of 85. This will be the first year that Aztec will send a full team to State, completing their coach, Irene Barry's goal. Barry's new is to win State. The winning score at last year's State tournament was a 77. One of Aztec's star golfers, Linda Peralta, scored 77 at her last tournament.

Irene Barry has been coaching for two years at Aztec. When she started, the program had 8 participants. It has since grown to 25. She hopes to see the sport continue to grow and expand.
