Five hundred sixty one youth wrestlers and their families descended into the town of Aztec for the 37th year. This was the yearly pilgrimage that is called the Aztec Youth Wrestling Tournament. The high school wrestlers answered the call once again as they set the mats out Friday, officiated from 9 am until 4 pm, and put the mats back. The day was loud and long, but what is expected and learned while 23 high school, and mid school wrestlers, and managers give back to their community cannot be measured, but will be better understood as time passes. This is not to forget the many youth parents who spent their time helping to pull off and run this extravaganza. Aztec Wrestling is a better program after having done this event. I have witnessed young men and women grow up just a little bit more on these given Saturdays.

On Monday, April 10th, five Aztec Wrestlers will be honored by the Navajo Times Newspaper as All Star Wrestlers: Junior State Runner-up Josiah Griego, freshman 3rd in State Garrett Birzer, sophomore State Champion Cody Candelaria, junior State Runner-up Dominic Dufur, and junior State Champion Austin Littlefield, with Cody Candelaria as the Outstanding Light Weight Wrestler of the Year. This year’s Awards will be held at the Phil Thomas Performing Arts Center in Shiprock, NM. The four states area winter sports athletes will be honored for their accomplishments. The Navajo Times, based in Window Rock, Arizona, has been honoring Four Corners area athletes for many years.

Aztec Wrestling members who helped with the Youth Tournament: Josiah Griego, Garrett Birzer, Ethan John, Dylan St. Vrain, Hunter Medina, Bella Wells, Bode Wooley, Justin Hargis, Zane Chapman, Caleb Varzeas, Austin Littlefield, Cody Candelaria, Sammy Minton, Dominic Dufur, Logan Klepac, Christian Robison, Acea Murch, Kyle Kimbell, Jared O’Toole, Logan Thorpe, CD Simkins, Abi Moya and Angelene Kaupp.
