The Aztec Post Office has announced that they will be having a Passport Fair on April 28 and 29. The Post Office, located at 601 S. Rio Grande, will be open from 9 am - 3 pm both days for first time passport applicants. The postal employees will also help you apply for a renewal, but they do not process that application for you, according to Aztec’s Postmaster Laciene Roach. They can also take your passport photo for $15. Roach suggests that you wear a dark color for the photo, because the background is white and, if you wear white, you will appear as “a floating head.”

Photo requirements are very strict ... it must show the top of your ears, so if you have longer hair, it has to be tucked behind the ears. No uniforms are allowed ... police, boy scout, etc.

The cost for the first time passport is $110 for adults 16 and over; and $80 for those under 16. There is also a $25 processing fee that will be collected separately. The passport books are valid for ten years for adults and five years for those under 16. You also have the option of a “passport card,” which is only valid for travel by land and by sea (no air) to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean. Cost of the card is $30 for adults 16 and older, and $15 for those under 16. The card is valid for five years. The normal processing time for the passport is six weeks, but the process can be expedited for an additional $60 fee. Passport fees must be included with your application in the form of a check or money order.

For your first passport, please be sure to bring with you an original or state certified birth certificate, and a current (valid) drivers license, state issued ID card or military ID. “For faster service, please provide photocopies of the front and back of your identity documents,” Roach said.

If you have questions before the fair, be sure to call the Post Office at 505-334-6181, and they will be able to answer all your questions.
