2017 Awards Banquet

March 17, 2017

On Friday, March 10th the 60th Aztec Wrestling end of the season awards banquet was held at the high school MPR. In attendance was administrator Bryan Sanders, coaches, wrestlers, parents, the Hesser and Allenbaugh families, along with Legends of the Past speaker Dr. Nate McClain and wife Lisa.

Dr. Nate McClain is a 1999 AHS graduate, a three time Wrestling state champion, a collegiate All American from Iowa Central Community College and division one Nebraska University. He talked about self reflecting on working hard enough to be the best you can be in whatever endeavor you choose. He spoke how Wrestling helped him to achieve goals that he had set on and off the mat. Dr. McClain is a Palmer School of Chiropractic Medicine graduate, and is running a practice in Aztec at West Side Plaza called Adjusted Chiropractic. He is an example of an Aztec Wrestler giving back to his community.

Coach Maxwell talked about goals that were met this season: the winning of the District 1-5A Championship and a Third Place team finish at the State Tournament, with an average 9.9 grade level team. He went on to say the future is up to us now if we want to move up at the State Tournament next year.

The Hesser and Allenbaugh families were in attendance with Tiffany, sister of the late Chuckie Hesser coming from California with her family to hand out the Chuckie Hesser Memorial Awards. Nine Aztec Wrestlers reached the 40 point or more level to be placed on the continuing wall plaque with junior Austin Littlefield scoring a record breaking 295.5 points and receiving the plaque. No senior reached the minimal criteria for the annual scholarship this year.
